How can we Manage Stress and Cope with our Comfort Zones

Some days it can be more difficult to go beyond the stress but that is usually when pushing the comfort zone as well. We all get uptight and have sleepless nights, worries, doubts and feel destabilised. How can we best face these situations in life?

Do you get periods when your stress and anxiety levels just seem to be climbing, climbing, climbing and you feel like a pressure cooker not knowing what direction you are going to explode in? Well, yes, that’s me! Even worse, I am a coach, trainer and mentor so I know all the tools, all the strategies all the ways out, through and around… Do they work, yes absolutely! All the time? Hmmmm, some days it can be more difficult to go beyond the stress but that is usually when pushing the comfort zone as well. Thank goodness it is unusual for me to stay in this dark area for long and as I already said, I have the tools!

My mini freak out at the moment is because of moving (house, country, business, financial residency — ugh! All of which seem far more complicated than the last time). On top of that my grown-up children are having some fairly dire problems and even though I am not the ‘googoo gaga’ maternal type, I would beat the fiercest tiger by a million miles when it comes to protecting my kids so it is driving me crazy just having to sit and watch and not being able to magic away their hurt and the total unfairness of it all. I digress…

Why is it making me freak so much? Because things are not going how I want which is trying my patience. Because I have become very ‘comfortable’ (I mean the mindset and habits type of comfortable rather than materially) in the lifestyle I have and jumping into the ‘unknown’ seems much more challenging than it did 10 years or so ago… Because I am having to do all this at a distance which makes it slower and more complicated. Because there is too much bureaucracy and red tape which I hate. Because I don’t know if I am doing the right thing — i.e. I don’t trust my own judgement because I am right in the middle of it.

Can you see all the key reasons I have listed and analyse the main problems — stress at what I can’t control and moving out of my comfort zone. These are the main reasons we all get uptight and have sleepless nights, worries, doubts and feel destabilised.

How can we best face these situations in life?

  1. Disassociate ourselves — so really try to put some distance and almost step out of our own body and look down on ourselves (like watching a film) and give you the ‘character’ some advice and objectivity on the situation from you the ‘viewer’
  2. Search for the positives in the situations and the parts of it you are happy about — great for reducing the negative power/influence
  3. Really up your health and wellbeing care of yourself. So, extremely healthy food, lots of exercise, meditation, yoga, out in nature and very importantly — be absolutely religious about getting enough good quality sleep.
  4. A new tool to try which I am finding truly excellent — listening to John Levine’s Alphamusic. John has developed this over the years, (founded upon scientific research into brainwave activity and the influence of music on the mind) and now has 34 (?) albums for various situations. I have 2 of them, one for sleep (Orange Grove Siesta) and the other for stress/anxiety (Silence of Peace Vol 1). In fact, I am so impressed by Alphamusic, and the science behind it and how it works that I am doing a series of interviews with John on how this can be used in business and our professional lives and careers as well as in our personal life.

So, when you are stressed, or freaking out about something, look at the why, find the real deep-down reason then try to put my tips into place… Also, don’t beat yourself up, moving out of our comfort zone as well as being in situations we can’t control isn’t easy.

It is normal to react, just love and look after yourself instead of burning yourself into a dried-up frazzle of anger and depression.

Life is still good; the sun will shine again — and sooner than you think! What are you struggling with now? And what is one step you can take to lean in to the practices that will help you to feel better? 😊
